1977 Niepoort Garrafeira Porto

620,00 c/ IVA

Still young in color, it is brownish red in the center with a more orange edge. On the nose, we are transported to a dimension where everything is at once complex, fine and balanced: spices, red fruit (plums), chocolates and light toast with notes of dried fruit and cigar box. The palate only confirms what you’d expect: elegant, soft, with silky tannins that combine well with an acidity that conveys great freshness and pleasure. A persistent and elegant finish. JG95, JR17

Description

The second generation of the Niepoort family, at the end of the 19th century, had the happy idea of buying around 4,000 dark green blown-glass demijohns, ranging in capacity from 8 to 11 liters, from a German glassmaker in Oldenburg. Eduard Karel Jacob van der Niepoort died at an early age and it was his son, Eduard Marius van der Niepoort, Dirk’s grandfather, who disposed of the demijohns, bottling the best wines from the 1931 harvest and thus creating the “Garrafeira Niepoort”. From the distant year of 1931 to the present day, maturation in the demijohns sealed with cork stoppers has been closely monitored and is an almost “sacred” ritual for the Niepoort and Nogueira families. Today, Niepoort is the only producer of the “Garrafeira” style of Port wine. The “Garrafeira” style combines the aromas of barrel ageing with the finesse and elegance of bottle ageing.
